Fat Embolism Syndrome


Abstract
Fat embolism syndrome is a rare but severe complication which occurs after long bone fracture or severe soft tissue injury, an a result of an embolism of fat globules in the important vessels of lung, brain and skin, and it is characterized by acute respiratory distress, change in mentality, and, petechial hemorrhages in skein.
There is disagreement as to pathogenesis, clinical diagnostic criteria and treatment of fat embolism syndrome, and the presence of pulmonary fat embolism is a relatively common accompaniment of trauma, while the clinical entity is an infrequent occurrence. There is a possibility of an increasing incidence of fat embolism syndrome because of an increasing incidence of severe industrial injury and traffic accident.
This in a case report of fat embolism syndrome which we experienced in Kon Kuk University Chung Joo Min Jung Hospital.
